Meet My New Baby!

YAY!! I’ve finally aquired some new camera bling! Isn’t she beautiful!? I was so very excited to get this external flash. I really used to be terrified of flash photography, but I’m really beginning to enjoy this phenomenon called light! After taking a few classes in light and learning a bit on my own online, I decided to take the plunge and start experimenting on my own. I love this flash because it can turn 360 degrees to bounce light off of any wall or ceiling so that the effect in the photograph isn’t so harsh.  I purchased it yesterday after a great Digital Photography class and couldn’t wait for nightfall. And as luck would have it…a friend of mine was celebrating the purchase of his first home with a big bar-b-que full of family and friends last night. Instead of dreading the setting sun…I couldn’t wait!! The bar-b-que started off with 3 gi-nor-mous pork tender loins that had been marinating all day. (Thanks to Jim and Spencer the amaziing cooks!) Everyone who attended brought a dish to pass. So the desserts, appetizers, side items and munchie foods were fun and different. (The forever lasting “diet” was put on hold last night.) Jim and Emily were opening wine in the garage and I decided to start testing my new flash on them. I took these photos long after sunset in a garage that had very flourescent lighting. Which would normally cast an eerie green glow over everyone creating a sickly skin tone effect. My old flash would have simply washed everyone out and created annoying little shadows.  Now, POOF!! Sickly skin tones and garish lighting be gone!

Now I know the photo looks a little bit “soap opera head shot” ish….but I just can’t stop smiling when I see it! Don’t they look amazing!?!? Emily’s hair was just too adorable not to photograph…and look at Jim’s muscles! That is what the Yoga Shelter will do for you. We were inside their garage (where all of the amazing food and beverages were set up) and I was very pleased with the light in the photograph. No harsh shadows, no shining foreheads, no washing out. Good job new external flash! Ok so after I showed Emily and Jim this shot…they got a little goofy and started posing for me.

You’ll notice that I was able to control the light in each photo. They are all a bit different. Which is one of my favorite things about this flash. You can have different desired lighting effects without changing locations. I’m excited to keep playing with it to see what sort of lighting works best in darker places. All in all, I’m very happy with the new edition to my family. Can’t wait for more practice!

So now on to congratulating Spencer on his new home. It’s a beautiful house on Catalpa in Berkley, MI. It’s just a few blocks from Emily and I. I’m so happy that you guys (both Jim and Spence) are settled in. You cooked amazing food last night. Thank you for having me. I have lots more photos from the bar-b-que and will post them as soon as possible. So stay tuned! I’m also playing with a 30 day trial of Adobe Lightroom, so post processing is taking me a bit longer than usual.  Can’t wait to share more photos with you!

Betsy - Yea for you!

I’ve heard great things about Lightroom. I’m sure you’ll love it.

Where did you take your class? Sounds like you have a great camera shop nearby. (Our’s in town leaves much to be desired.)
