I’ve been searching for the perfect rug in our kitchen for a while now. I love our hardwood floors, but they are over 100 years old and the high traffic areas need to be protected. The rugs also help evenly distribute the weight of walking on them. We learned the hard way not to wear stilleto heels in the kitchen after I was standing near the sink and my heel split the wood in two – of course a remark was made that I ate too much at dinner. 🙁 We’ve also learned that our floors lack sub-flooring underneath the hardwood – who forgets to put down sub-flooring?!? That has been the major cause of soft spots and the boards splitting. I spoke with a friend of mine at American Elegance Wood Works about our options and how to replace the weak spots and the broken pieces of wood. Dusty is an AHHH-MAZING craftsman. Take a look at his website. I had the pleasure of going around to the gorgeous homes he works on to take pictures for his gallery. Awesome!
Now back to the story…so Dusty told me that I have two options. (1) Use the current floor as new sub-flooring and put down new hardwood on top. This immediately caused my heart to break. Who wants to cover up 100 year old floors?! (2) Reinforce the floors from the basement with 2×4 and put down area rugs to protect the top. Since option number two is both cheaper and preserves the character of the home, we are opting for that one – for now. I mean these floors are so old that they can’t even be sanded and refinished again….that’s how little “meat” is left on them. So I’m tip toeing around and demanding that every girlfriend of mine remove her very cute heels and tread lightly before they come in.
The good news in all of this is, I’m on a rug hunting mission! My mom told me about FLOR and it’s just what I was looking for. Especially for the kitchen…these little tiles can easily be picked up and washed if something were to spill on them. You can create any design your little heart desires! (It took me forever to decide on one.) When it arrived on my doorstep, there was someone else who was just as excited as I was….
Kitty LOVES carpet tiles! I literally opened the box, turned around to throw some packing paper away and when I looked back again, she was sprawled out on top. And then every tile that I put down, she had to inspect and lay on. We were quite the little team. 🙂
That last phot in the lower right hand corner is Kitty’s favorite spot to lay. The fridge blows warm air from the vent and she finds this very pleasing.
So now, the project in the kitchen is a big bold accent color. I want something very different and opposite from the floor. Since the carpet is using warm and cool tones, I think I want a nice cool blue, aqua or teal to use. I need new dish towels, wall color and accent pieces. I guess this means I have to go to Homegoods. Yessssss.
