Deep breathe in……deeeeeep breathe out. We are less than 7 months from saying I DO. And before we know it, Christmas will be over, we will have rung in 2011 and we will be T-Minus 6 months and counting. And I have a feeling that is when time will start to fly by (like it hasn’t already.) I’m thankful that we are in a bit of a stand still when it comes to the wedding plans. (My mother is laughing at this because she is nothing but at a stand still in HER wedding day progress. That’s why I love her and cherish every ounce of her!) But really, on my end, I’ve had to say no to planning or deciding on anything else until after the New Year. I’m in the height of my travel season for Australian Gold and I’m still wrapping up loose ends from my incredibly successful photography 2010 season. Needless to say…I’m burning the proverbial candle at not only both ends…but every possible spot in between those ends. Such is life.
So for those that love a little dose of wedding planning or just a little dose of the “life of others”…I thought I’d share my very coveted and special Save The Dates that went out to our family and closest friends. If there is one thing that I’ve struggled with, it’s the guest list. I want ANY and EVERY one to be there. But alas, our venue is small and we had to draw the line somewhere. If I had all the space and money in the world…each and everyone of you even READING this would be there!! (And you know it too. In my book, the more the merrier!) To the friends and co-workers that aren’t able to share our special day with us….I want you to know that you’re in our hearts now and every day.
So on to the fun stuff….I wanted our Save The Dates to be spectacular. I wanted them to set the stage for the tiny and intricate details that will make our wedding day like no other. So my first thought was that I had to feature our less than traditional and oh so fabulous engagement photos that were done by Kevin Keefer.
You can fit so much info into such a tiny space! If you are wondering why there aren’t any photos of Drew and I “looking” at the camera….that’s because we don’t work in that oh-so-traditional-fashion. We like to walk on the wild side. (GASP!! By not looking at the camera! We are soooo daring!) I also wanted to include more than your average amount of info in our Save The Dates since it is a destination wedding for most of our guests. And more than 75% of that guest list has never been to Grand Haven. I went with the brochure or tri-fold style and I haven’t regretted it yet. Actually, many people thought that this was our actual invite…oh no. I hope you wait with bated breath for that one. 🙂
I had my patterns and digital papers custom designed with our colors…which happen to be fuschia, orange and royal blue – think jewel tones. And then I incorporated them into my own design for the Save The Date fold out.
I’m kind of surprised I didn’t photograph the back of the fold out…it’s a photo of me being carried on Drew’s back and it says “We can’t wait!!!” Very typical and if you know me well, you can hear my giggles and squeels through the photograph. Why did we include accommodations 8 months early? Because Grand Haven is a tiny tourist town with only a few places to stay in the summer. And these places fill up quickly! The best news is that we got extra rooms blocked at the Holiday Inn after the Save The Dates went out. This hotel is my favorite in town…it’s right on the Grand River and has the best little Tiki Bar ever. (I think a few of my Coast Guard Festival Co-Conspirators can attest to the high levels of fun that can be had here.)
Our dining room has turned into wedding central. I don’t even pick up when we have company over…I just move everything to the tops of the dining room chairs and push them under the table. It’s far too tiring to pull everything out when it’s time to get a little work done. And this way I’m always reminded that there is something that I could and should be doing.
So other than getting the Save The Dates out….I have also accomplished the following….
- The dress – YES! This was far harder than I expected it to be. Not the decision part…but the actual trying the dress on part. They are so dang heavy.
- The Bridesmaid dress – Yes!
- Engagement pictures
- Save The Dates
- The venue
- The church
- The food – that tasting was fun, fun, fun
- The DJ – yes…to the disappointment of both Drew and myself, we couldn’t find a band that we both agreed on. I had Drew listening to band demo after band demo and we just couldn’t pick one. But the DJ we found – and experienced for ourselves at a friend’s wedding – kept the night going strong and I don’t think I heard his actual voice once. Which was a huge bonus for him. Lisa…I want your play list!
- The rehearsal food – mom and dad got to taste that one. I trust them.
- The rehearsal location
- Invite designer – first round of proofs looked AHHH-mazing! www.inkandivory.com Check her out…Kaitlin rocks.
- Flowers – almost done!
- annnndddd…..OH! The mother’s have their wedding day dress and rehearsal dresses. Gorgeous!! I think they found those week 2 after the engagement announcement.
Things (STILL) To Do:
- Hair and make up artist – I have a very good idea, but I’m still waiting on a few decisions and things to fall into place.
- Party bus and transportation
- Welcome baskets/bags
- Ceremony details and music
- RINGS! (I know exactly what I want)
- Wedding day present for Drew (I also know exactly what I’m getting him)
- And I’m just going to stop at 10….this list could get up to number 40, but I’m trying to de-stress by blogging right now. And it was starting to not work.
So. That’s where we are. I’ve been getting lots of emails and FB questions on how things are going…so I just thought I’d share it with all of my blogging friends, family and followers. If you have ANY. And I mean ANY recommendations for me, please, please share. I take all of your recommendations seriously, even if I don’t end up going in that direction. I save names, websites and phone numbers in a file for future reference (and future family weddings! Or BABIES!)
I have lots of other exciting updates to share, but for now, I think this colossal personal blog post needs to come to an end. To my family…I can’t thank you enough for your support, enthusiasm and love during these past few (stressful) months. You are all blessings in my life. Thank you for continuing to take my phone calls even though sometimes I’m a little insane on the other end (thanks mommy…and A Lori). To my friends…love. All I can say is I love each and every one of you for ALSO continuing to take and return my rambling voicemail messages and sometimes overly excited phone calls. To my clients….Oh. My. You are all soooo very important to me. I can’t believe the successful year that I’ve had in my photography busines…on top of having a full time traveling job…and on top of planning a wedding. I can’t believe that you’ve stuck by me. You are truly awesome and I’m so thankful for your love and support. I’m also continuously surprised that at the end of an update email on your products and prints…you stick in a line to ask how my wedding plans are or how my traveling has been going. God has truly blessed me.
I hear Drew downstairs calling for me to join him in our nightly ritual. One (or sometimes TWO!) episodes of Dexter. We’re obsessed. Thanks for checking in. I’m still alive and kickin! I’ll update you again when I come up for air. I hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving. xoxoxoo
