A Halloween Update from Lift Up Liam :: Happy Halloween from Liam! We obviously didn’t get to participate this week, but did get to do some trick or treating before we were admitted, thanks to a local church in Sunbury.Liam had a rough week. All week he has been on IV pain meds and nutrition since the mouth sores were so bad he couldn’t swallow. He constantly drooled or spit his saliva out which caused dried cracked skin around his mouth. He slept a lot due to the morphine, and required numerous blood transfusions.
However, the good news is that the worst is behind us now. His ANC was zero all week and we waited patiently for something, anything to let us know that the bone marrow was starting to regenerate. Yesterday, his ANC was 115 and today it is 540!!!! If counts continue to stay above 500, it means the marrow did engraft on Day +11. We posted earlier that the soonest anyone had been discharged was Day +11, however we found out today that was incorrect. Really, the fastest anyone has engrafted is Day +11 (so he is tied for the record for NB kiddos).
He is weaning pain meds and nutrition. Getting back to his ornery self. Finally laughing and talking again. His favorite activity right now is applying chapstick, which he does constantly. Our biggest goal is to get him to eat and drink again. Each day should be better than the day before and hopefully we can leave in about one week.
